It’s Never too Early to Think about Oktoberfest!
Hickory’s Oktoberfest is a three day festival held outdoors during the second weekend of October each year. The Festival begins on Friday, and the hours of operation on the first day are from 12 PM to 11:30 PM. Saturday, guests can show up at 10 AM, and the fest closes at 11 PM. The hours on Sunday are from 12 PM to 5 PM. The entire are of the Oktoberfest is handicap accessible, and guests will be able to find plenty of parking spaces as well.
You will find many things to love about the festival, including beer gardens where you can sample many different kinds of beer. The festival also offers plenty of live music for all tastes. You will find traditional polka as well as rock and roll. The festival has three stages, so you should always be able to hear some great live music.
You will also be able to find plenty of great food at the festival. You will be able to choose from authentic German bratwurst to blooming onions, turkey legs, cheese steak sandwiches, and more. Everything that your tongue and stomach could ever desire will likely make an appearance at Oktoberfest in Hickory. In addition to the food, you will find works from local artists and craftspeople. Make time to visit the arts and crafts are of the festival.
Commercial vendors will also be available selling all manner of wares. Kids and adults will be able to play the carnival games and ride the amusement park style rides. Everyone is going to have a great time at Hickory’s Oktoberfest this year, just like they do every year. If you are going to be in the area, make it a point to come and celebrate with the locals.

Come Join the Greater Hickory Pet Expo
Everyone who has a pet knows just how important those animals are. They are a part of the family, and it doesn’t matter if they have fur, scales, or fins. Pet owners love their animals. Those who are living in or visiting the Hickory area might want to head out to the Greater Hickory Pet Expo on June 5th and June 6th. You will be able to shop for a variety of pet products and services. The expo also has entertainment, demonstrations, education, and more.
You can find some great educational classes at the expo. Introduction to Saltwater Aquariums will teach beginners how to start and keep their saltwater aquarium, and you will learn about all the costs involved with such a project. You might want to take the Keeping Pets Happy & Healthy Class with veterinarian Deidre Sesan, where you will learn all about the health of your pets and how to make them thrive in your care.
One of the demonstrations that is sure to be popular is the K9 demonstration. The sheriff’s office will show how their K-9 units help their human partners with searches and apprehension of criminals.
If your pet doesn’t mind wearing a costume, you might consider entering him or her into the pet costume contest. Even if you do not have a pet to bring in costume, you will still want to bring your camera.
Pet lovers will be able to find plenty of things to see and do when they visit the expo. The Saturday hours for the expo are 10 AM to 6 PM, and the hours on Sunday are from 11 AM to 5 PM. The cost is $6 for adults, $4 for children aged 6 – 15. Children 5 and under are free.

Hickory Con, the Comic Convention, Is Coming Soon!
If you like comic books, games, and trading cards, then you do not want to miss the largest one day comic convention in the Carolinas! Coming back to the city on May 8, the convention will boast more than 100 dealer, artist and guest tables. You will be able to find all of the comic books that you’ve been looking for, meet artists, and have a fun all around experience. It is a fun and friendly atmosphere, and you won’t be disappointed that you came.
Many people come to the convention in costume, but if that is not your thing, you can always just engage in some people watching. Star Wars and Star Trek fans will also find plenty of merchandise on hand.
Gamers will find that the convention hosts tournaments for a variety of card games including Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Naruto. Some of the tournaments are sanctioned, but you will be able to find tables where you can play a casual, fun game amongst newfound friends as well.
If you are a dealer with wares to sell, you will want to check out the pricing for the tables and see if they still have room. A number of vendors are already confirmed, but you may still be able to get a table for the con.
One of the best parts about the con is that the admission charge is only $3 per person, a pittance compared to some of the other conventions around the country. If you are in the area and you want to see what it is all about, head down to the Hickory Metro Convention Center on May 8. Good times, good people, and a fun atmosphere are what these types of conventions are all about.

It’s Almost Time for the 9th Annual Art on the Avenue!
The Art on the Avenue Festival will be held on Saturday, May 1 from 10 AM until 4 PM on the SALT Block lawn, located just behind the Hickory Museum of Art. Art on the Avenue is one of the most popular events in Hickory each year, and it is a great time for families and art lovers. The event is free and has something for people of all ages to enjoy.
The kids will be able to take part in the arts and crafts provided at the show, and they will be able to see a variety of different animals. Visitors will be able to find food booths throughout the area, and they will be entertained by live music.
For this year’s festivities, Carmen Eckard will emcee the event from 10 AM until noon. The popular emcee will also be on hand to tell stories and to organize entertaining youth performances. For the music lovers in the crowd, attendees will be able to enjoy the funk rock instrumental group DANG!, who will be performing throughout the afternoon.
Previous years have had attendance of more than 2000 visitors and 30 area artists. This year, the event should be even larger. The same weekend, visitors will be able to experience Spring Fest, held at Union Square. This gives people even more things to see and do when they are in Hickory on May 1, and everyone in the family will find plenty of fun!
If you can’t make it down to the festival, you can always visit the Hickory Museum of Art, which is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 Pm and on Sunday from 1 PM to 4 PM. Admission to the museum is always free!
